Main Goal: Improving his muscle tightness and strength to assist in transfers and improve the quality of his life
“I would recommend it to anyone because you can't put a price tag on getting someone up and out of a chair.”
What made you decide to come to Breakthrough PT?
I knew the program would be a great program, but the person doing the program is really the reason why I came. I’ve always been interested in doing intensive therapy for Tristan, but as he got older I didn’t think it was available for him.
How did you feel about Tristan’s time in the intensive program?
It's a very intensive program. He was here for 3 hours a day for 3 weeks straight, Monday through Friday. That's a lot for a boy-- a man that has been sitting in a chair for 20 years. It was a lot, but it was very well worth it.
What kind of improvements have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough PT?
He stands better. I could not even get his diapers on and off because his legs were always scissoring. He's much looser and able to do things that I never thought he would be able to do!
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
We have a long road ahead of us, but the 3-week intensive program was 100% worth it. It was very upbeat, whoever was here, everyone was cheering him on. Christine worked endlessly to get him to where he is the past 3 weeks and we will definitely continue the program. It was a lot of work for everyone and it was very well worth it.
If someone was on the fence about working with us, what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
It was very expensive, but it’s an investment that’s worth every penny. Every penny. And I would recommend it to anyone because you can't put a price tag on getting someone up and out of a chair.
Interviewees: Parents, Gary & Kathy
Daughter: Katelynn, Age 9, CDKL-5
Main Goal: To sit up on her own, stand, and walk one day
"You want to go to a place where you feel like they're on the same team, that you're working together towards a goal. I've never seen somebody work so hard at that as Christine. All the services that are provided here, with Sibshops and working with different organizations, trying to raise money for different organizations. It's not just about the therapy-- it's about the entire experience. You always want to go somewhere where you feel like you're a team working on something as a goal and that's what we feel here.”
What were your goals when you first started working with Breakthrough?
G: Well, we certainly wanted to strengthen her core to begin to develop some of the skills that we'd like to see. Skills that she had lost in the past with big bouts of seizures.
K: The core was very important to us because that seems to be the beginning part of being able to sit independently and walk.
What kind of improvements or impact on Katelynn's life have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough?
G: We've seen a lot of progress in the period of time that she's been here in terms of holding herself up better and being able to sit up and keep better head control. Those are the sorts of things that we're starting to see now. Things that we hoped would improve over time and then get to a point where she's able to sit up independently.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
G: First off, I think she actually enjoys it and we like to see her smiling and being able to work at something. Chance comes and visits us every once in a while which is always great and Christine is always smiling. We like coming to a place where we feel welcome and that Katelynn is doing something that helps her out, which is always a goal of ours.
K: Absolutely. I'd have to say that we always feel welcome here, Katelynn's progress, Christine is awesome, she's amazing. I'm just very very happy that we found this place and that Katelynn is progressing the way she is.
What would you want other people to know about working with us?
K: I think you're just very accommodating. Even if it's with time frames or with what your concerns are. I think that you're very open to hearing us out and what we are looking for as far as with her progress. And that you care. You care about her. You care about the patient.
G: You want to go to a place where you feel like they're on the same team, that you're working together towards a goal. I've never seen somebody work so hard at that as Christine. All the services that are provided here, with Sibshops and working with different organizations, trying to raise money for different organizations. It's not just about the therapy-- it's about the entire experience. You always want to go somewhere where you feel like you're a team working on something as a goal and that's what we feel here.
Is there anything else that you want people to know?
G: Everything that we said, you will experience here and is probably not something you will see at other places, in terms of the dedication and caring for your child as if your child is the only child that's here. That's the feeling that I always get-- Katelynn is the only child that matters. That's how I always feel when we come in the door.

Interviewee: Mom, Maria
Son: Barret, Age 26, Cerebral Palsy
Main Goal: Improve his sitting and independence so that he can do more for himself
Could you describe what things were like when your child first began working with Breakthrough PT? What were you most concerned about? What goals did you have?
My goal when Barret was little was for him to reach his potential. Now my goal is to keep his body from deformities and pain. My main goal is really to keep him from pain because I know, with age, the contractures will get worse. I try to keep him moving. He has difficulty controlling his body and movements.
What kind of improvements were you able to see or feel as a result of working with Breakthrough PT?
I've seen improvements in his posture, his strength, and his balance. I notice when he sits on the edge of his bed, he's straighter. He's gotten stronger!
What do you love most about visiting our office?
I love that the therapy is different. The whole body is working at the same time. I think working all of his muscles and every part of his body is making him a lot stronger. And his therapist is great. She really cares, which is very important.
How has working with Breakthrough PT made you feel about your son's mobility?
His mobility has improved. He's getting stronger. The weeks that he isn't able to come, I know that he needs to go back.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
Experience a new type of therapy. I think it's good for everyone.
If someone was on the fence about working with us, what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
Try the therapy. You have nothing to lose. I was looking for this kind of therapy for years. Thank God I found this place! It's really about Christine. I am so thankful for her. She is helping me and she cares for her patients, which is very important.
Interviewee: Kimberly, Age 17, Cerebral Palsy
Main Goal: Be as independent as possible
“I believe that since I came to Breakthrough, my quality of life has greatly improved...I've become more independent!
Why did you decide to come to Breakthrough PT?
I came to Breakthrough because I wanted to improve my own physical abilities with the technologies and equipment offered. I also saw it in other states and thought it was a cool technique so I wanted to try it.
Is this type of therapy different from other therapies you've tried?
I have tried home and school PT, but that hasn't given me the same results as this has.
What kind of improvements have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough PT?
I believe that since I came to Breakthrough, my quality of life has greatly improved because I've become more independent and my strength and endurance has also improved. I've been able to do a lot more independent activities in daily living and I'm able to be a lot more helpful at home to my parents when they need to assist me.
What did you like most about coming to Breakthrough PT?
I enjoyed just being able to finally have something that I can do that's adapted to me. I call it my adaptive playground. Even though it's hard, I enjoy that I can work hard and achieve new things.
If someone was on the fence about working with us, what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
I have worked with Christine since August 2016. I have seen my own abilities improve with her method and style of therapy. My motivation to make progress and work harder has increased due to Christine's positive energy and tough love approach. She pushes me to be the best that I can be. I know she has my best interest in mind and I know she's willing to do anything possible to help me reach my full potential. I am grateful to have her by my side in my therapy journey.

Interviewees: Parents, Cynthia and Joseph
Son: Howie, Age 19
Main Goal: Improve his head control and sit independently
What were things like when you started working with Breakthrough PT? What were you frustrated with?
When we first started working with Breakthrough PT, Howie could not lift his head by himself and sit up, which is one of our biggest goals for him. So we chose to come here and try to reach that goal for him. We're frustrated that he is able to sit up, but his head control prevents it. He throws his head back and his body gets thrown back.
What kinds of improvements/impacts on yours and Howie's life have you been able to see and feel?
As a result of working with Breakthrough PT, we have seen that he now can hold his head in midline. He's not dropping it all the way down. When he's in the equipment, he's standing and sitting and supporting his head a lot more. He's definitely showing improvement in the areas of controlling his head better and they're even seeing it in school.
Have you noticed any improvements at home?
It's easier at home now because he's more tolerant of us putting him on the wedge and picking up his head and he actually seems to be enjoying it. He's cracking up laughing while he's lifting his head and we're telling him how wonderful he's doing.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough PT?
We enjoy coming every week. If he could sit up, if he could support his head it'll change the view of his world. Seeing these little improvements is giving us hope that he will actually achieve this goal. We love coming here.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
It's definitely a more intense program. The bungee cords and the equipment take the weight off of his muscles and allows him to get better control without tightening up his whole body and he's definitely enjoying it. He's very happy, he doesn't feel the pressure. Just in general it is a really excellent program for kids like my son.
If someone was on the fence about working with us, what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
Anything is better than nothing. To give a try to this kind of program is worth it because kids like Howie might not get anywhere with conventional PT. This gives him a straight hour of support and actually using his own muscles without having to overwork his whole body. Anything is worth a try to improve and get them to the best ability that they can reach.
Is there anything else that you'd like people to know?
I've seen people in the past who've gone all the way to Poland, Florida, California to try these types of programs and they weren't available to us on Long Island and now they are. I've seen improvements in kids through my work that have gone on these week-long trips. So it definitely has it's values and it's definitely something that our kids have available to them now. I think it's worth it to give it a try and to give the kids an opportunity to improve.

Interviewee: Mom, Cheryl
Daughter: Ella, Age 4, Congenital Vertical Talus
Main Goal: To navigate beyond the school. To navigate life. I want her to maximize whatever her full potential is and get the most out of her life.
Could you describe what things were like when Ella first started working with Breakthrough?
Ella is 4 years old and at birth she presented with congenital vertical talus, which meant that both of her feet were deformed and in a very very stiff position with really no mobility at all. When Ella came in to Breakthrough, she had already had a couple of years under her belt of physical therapy through Early Intervention and now through our school district. By age 3, she took her first steps so obviously those therapies helped her, but she had poor posture. She stood kind of bent over. She fell a lot and was unable to engage in age-appropriate play with other kids her age. When she would fall, sometimes to catch her balance, she would grab onto other kids. A couple of times she fell on top of other kids and at 4 years old, most children perceive that as pushing and aggression and they no longer want to play with that child. I feel that Ella is very capable of having friendships. She is very cognitively aware and sharp and wants to be friends with other kids.
What kinds of improvements have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Most notably her posture has changed dramatically. She is able to walk for longer periods of time. She falls significantly less. She's able to navigate our environment at home and is just able to do more without having as many falls. Playgrounds are still a little tricky for her, but she is able to handle stairs better. Prior to starting at Breakthrough, she was using her hands to pull her up the steps. Now she's actually engaging her leg muscles to do that. I also noticed that her speech improved. She was very talkative, but it was difficult to understand what she was saying and she really couldn't engage in a two-way conversation. I found that since doing the intensive program, Ella has been better able to communicate. She can stand still for longer without feeling like she's off balance so that's helped her tremendously. Overall, I'm just noticing a great deal of improvement.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
It's just been a great experience overall. When we were trying to get started with grants and apply for some funding for Ella to receive the intensive program, Breakthrough was very helpful with letters and whatever I needed to help Ella. I always felt very comfortable asking questions and discussing my concerns. How far do you push? When do you pull back? I think that's kind of a fuzzy line. When you're out and about and you child starts to feel pain, how do you know where the breaking point is? I got a lot of good guidance. I also really love that my whole family has been impacted here. My older daughters have attended the sibling workshops and I think for them that was really important to meet other children who have siblings with significant needs. Of course the parent workshops that are offered here are great. It's nice to feel supported.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
This is very different than Early Intervention and school based therapy. You want your child to be able to navigate the school, however, I really wanted Ella to navigate beyond the school. I want her to navigate life. I want her to maximize whatever her full potential is. I want to know that when Ella is my age, she's not going to be disabled. I want her to get the most out of her life. I just feel that the equipment and Christine's knowledge combined is like nothing you could ever imagine. Just working on very basic things-- they add on to each other. You can't run before you crawl and that's what it's really about.
Christine's knowledge and the types of equipment that are used here really promote the best outcome for your child. This a very warm environment here at Breakthrough. They're very easy to work with and very supportive overall. Intensive physical therapy is different from anything else we've ever tried for Ella. At Breakthrough, the whole family is considered. It's great when you can come to a place and get the support that not only your child needs, but that you and your family need.

Interviewee: Parents, Jackie and Anthony
Son: Dino, 4 years old, Cerebral Palsy and Epilepsy
Main Goal: Work on his strengthening and balance to be more independent
Could you describe what things were like when Dino first started working with Breakthrough?
J- Dino started having uncontrolled seizures at 4 months. He never developmentally sat, stood or walked by himself…everything was assisted. We came here after he had a pretty bad seizure episode and was hospitalized. So any progress he had made, there was a lot of regression. So we came here in hopes that he would be a little stronger. We thought it would help him work on his strengthening, balance, especially balance. There are things that he can’t do if someones assisting him, so the bungee, the idea of the bungees gave him this sense of self, which is also what I was excited about.
A- Yeah, we were researching different options and different things to do and we came across this type of therapy and we thought it would be something that would be good for him.
What kinds of improvements have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough?
A- I think with both sitting and standing. He still needs a good amount of support, but it’s much easier, handling him has been a lot easier.
J- And now he’ll stand, if he’s sitting in his chair and I want to take him out he’ll stand up and give me enough time to kind of give him help. Before it was never like that where he would even be sitting in his activity chair and be kind of slumped over - we never see that anymore. His trunk control is significantly better, he’s able to stand just me holding his waist for anywhere from 30 seconds to 3 minutes or even more.
A- Cognitively too!
J- Cognitive growth! I really saw huge difference too, which was almost unexpected. I wasn’t really expecting that. Cognitively he’s just focused now. He looks at people, smiles at you. When he sees someone come into the room he’ll acknowledge you now, he acknowledges our pet dog. You know things that he never noticed before, I feel like after doing an intensive program especially, that really helped him.
A- I feel like he’s doing better after each session, he s able to tolerate everything a little longer.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
A- It’s a fun experience when we get to come here, we get to see him smiling when he's working hard.
J- I mean most importantly is he likes coming here. I was worried that coming here would just be more frustrating because it's hard, but Christine is really good at giving him a short break when he becomes frustrated. Or not really a break but doing something that's still work but something that he enjoys. I think that really helps him like it here and then in turn we like it here...and how awesome you guys are.
How has working with Breakthrough helped you feel about Dino’s confidence and mobility?
J- I mean Dino never had a confidence problem! No, but as far as his mobility while he’s not doing anything independently it's easier to assist him. He’s getting bigger so it's not so easy to assist him as much as it used to be when he was small. So the fact that he can give us some help is massive. It makes our lives so much easier, day to day, everything. Everything that we do with him is a little bit easier because he has a little more muscle control, a little more strength.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough?
A- Don't be intimidated by the videos and pictures you see. At first we didn’t know what to expect but after the first session, and dealing with Christine and seeing like the operation of everything... it's just a good experience. Anybody who can give this a shot - definitely try it out. It's well worth it. We definitely made a good decision by doing this.
J- I feel like this was an investment we made, and that we're really happy that we made it. I think that the first time that we saw this and spoke with Christine she really listened to me. She was accepting of what I was saying and understood my concerns. So when we did come, she addressed my concerns upfront with me so I was much more comfortable. Instead of just telling me "yes, I've worked with kids like him", she listened to me and made it more personal for him and us.
If someone was on the fence about working with us, what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
J- I think the fact that you give a free phone consult and then let them come in and have a free exploration. I mean it’s like a no brainer! Try it out and see how it is.
Is there anything else you want to add, or that you would want people to know?
A- Just that I feel like we met a bunch of families who are currently coming here, or maybe who have come here in the past and we saw how happy they were, and we experienced the same thing. And it's just a great place, good atmosphere. We bring our daughter, Ella, Dino's sister here to hang out too.
J- It's a community of people who are going through similar things as you…you know similar but different. I mean we even connect with equipment like being able to just kind of open the doors for us to talk to other families about that kind of stuff is a big help…so we love it here.
Interviewee: Mom, Liz
Son: Michael, Age 3, Joubert Syndrome
Main Goal: Walking independently, Gaining strength and balance
What were things like when Michael first started working with Breakthrough?
L- He found a level of confidence in him that he didn’t have, he was trying things at home that he didn’t do before hand. We would see him try to climb off the couch or lift himself up to stand. Things that he may have learned through Early Intervention, but didn’t act on.
What were you most concerned about?
L- Our concern was really that Michael was getting physical therapy through Early Intervention, but we knew that with his condition we really needed more. He needed different things and with Early Intervention it was more simple things to get through life but they weren’t really focusing on the big things. They weren’t pushing to get him to walk immediately. They focused on different things - that were still great, but just not what we wanted. And we wanted more walking out of him, more strength and balance. When we learned that Breakthrough had the equipment and the alternative methods to do this is, it's what brought us here.
What improvements have you seen?
L- Part of his condition deals with missing a portion of the cerebellum vermis which controls balance. And so even if Michael could stand he couldn’t stand very well. He’d be very wobbly. Breakthrough has given him strength and core balance that he didn’t have in the past and has also taught him how to control himself. If he were to fall he would catch himself - that’s what we’ve really seen the big difference in. Those improvements have really impacted us because we feel a little safer. I mean Michael used to sit up and just fall, and not know how to catch himself. Now he puts his arms out and grabs himself and doesn’t fall as much which is much better as well.
What do you love most about visiting Breakthrough?
L- What we love most, myself, my husband, my family, is the atmosphere. It’s happy, it's fun, it's one of the few therapy locations my son comes to that he really enjoys. He just really has fun when he’s here, and we’re all very comfortable with Christine and the staff here.
How has working with Breakthrough helped you feel?
L- It makes us feel happy, it makes us feel proud. He’s doing much more than we expected him to do at this point in his life. And everyday he surprises us with new things and we can't feel anything but good inside when we see how far he’s come.
What would you tell someone who was on the fence about giving us a try?
L- I think that just by speaking to some of these families. Since I’ve been here for a year I’ve spoken with other moms that also come here and all of us only have good things to say. We are all so impressed with how far our children have come along since we’ve been here. Connecting with other parents really makes you understand what's right.
What would you want other people to know?
L- I would want other people to know that it’s a fun, exciting place and what you see your children accomplish is really special and really amazing and it doesn’t just happen through your kid. You see it in the eyes of Christine and all the other employees here as well. Their excitement, their happiness, and it makes you feel good as a parent that you made the right decision to bring your kid here. I just want to say that I know that my choosing Breakthrough was the right thing. We tried many alternative therapies, we traveled the country to find different physical therapy, occupational therapy locations, and different intensive programs not knowing this was even in our backyard and lucky enough we found Breakthrough. We don’t have to go anywhere else now.
Interviewee: Mom, Cristina
Daughter: Savvy, Age 4, Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy
Main Goal: To improve her core strength, sit independently, crawl, and eventually walk
What were things like when you first started working with Breakthrough?
C- When I first started here I was looking for her to really build that core strength so she’d be able to sit up, crawl and eventually walk. Her doctor told us about this type of therapy. We didn’t know if we would find it so we put it on the back burner and then our occupational therapist from Early Intervention told us about this place specifically because she had somebody coming here. She was raving about it and all the great work that Christine does, at the time it was only Christine, so thats why we called Cher and came for an assessment. Savvy was hysterical the first 2 times because it is hard work for her. She didn’t have that core strength and Christine just kept saying, "we’ll keep trying, she’ll do fine, she’s really a great candidate for this" and eventually Savvy just kind of took to her. I think it was like 3 or 4 sessions and now every time we come here she’s saying she’s ready when we get to the door, she’s excited, she’s smiling. First when we were at home we’d have to prop her up with pillows and blankets so she could sit up on her own and we could play games but after coming here she can sit for almost 16 minutes independently, and if she goes to fall she does bring herself back up and that’s all because of Breakthrough.
What improvements have you seen?
C- Just with her ability to do more. She holds a cup to drink and I think that's because of the stamina she now has from being here. She’ll try to pick up a fork to eat something. To sit in her chair alone and I’m not saying to her to keep her head up or to put her head down when she’s eating. She’s not falling anymore in the chair. I think that from being here she is able to sit up and do more and I can see long term that she will be able to do a few more things herself. Well the good thing is that she can do these things. Before this therapy you kind of doubt what she’d be able to do. So with the therapy it helps us see all the things that you guys think she can do and then do it. Like for example, Christine put her on the treadmill one time and I didn’t think she could do that but she took like 20 steps on the treadmill - I mean she’s hooked up to the bungees and what not, but I mean who would have thought she could do that. It gives us hope that she will be able to do more and improve her daily living skills.
What do you love most about coming to Breakthrough?
C- Well not even just the therapy, everyone here is so friendly and helpful. The transition from hiring - there's new staff members actually everywhere here between the office staff and therapists - Savvy transitioned really well with them and I wasn’t expecting that. She usually gets upset with anything new so I think everyone being friendly and helpful and her seeing that helped.
How has working with Breakthrough improved Savvy's confidence?
C- I think her confidence has improved greatly. For her to come here and want to work and want to do physical therapy which is extremely difficult for her to do. I have seen a great improvement with her confidence. She’s even talking more, when we first started she only had 3 or 4 words. Christine encourages her! Every time they laugh, they have a great time and Savvy tries to repeat what she has said. So not only is it helping her with her physical development, it's helping with her core strength and her ability to use her language and talk.
What would you want other parents like you to know?
C- That it's a really innovative and new approach to physical therapy. It's not only the bungees and the therasuit, it's also your regular therapy. But I think that the take they have on it here, they’re so positive, they praise the kids and they really work hard to get them to work hard, that's how you see the results. Just keeping with it. I think all the praise and encouragement is really what keeps Savvy motivated and happy to be here and work.
If someone was hesitant about working with us, what would you want them to know?C- I think that you really have to come in and try it and see for yourself. To not be on the fence about it? Maybe talk to parents like myself about it, to give our stories and share our experiences. And if you’re going to try it, try it a few times. If we had given up, we wouldn’t be where we are today. We really had to stick it through, quite a few weeks I doubted coming as well, but now looking back I’m glad that we did because she has made so many gains in her abilities. To sit, to crawl, to take steps with a walker, she wouldn’t have been able to do that if I gave up.
Interviewee: Mom, Tisha
Son: Amari, Age 4, Joubert Syndrome
Main Goal: Challenge him and push him so he can move independently
Amari’s Story
Amari is our second child and we had a clear pregnancy and everything was fine. We had a lot of complications once he was born. Doctors were very concerned because he demonstrated low muscle tone, his head was floppy. They did an MRI and he was diagnosed with Joubert Syndrome.>
It’s been a journey. We had difficulties especially in his early months up until he was three months old. He had issues with breathing and feeding so he required physical therapy, occupational therapy, and feeding therapy, but he’s really come a long way so we are just excited to see what’s to come. He’s really been doing well as of lately.
Could you describe what things were like when he first began working with Breakthrough PT?
When we first started working with Breakthrough, I think he just needed a program that had a lot of consistency and had a greater frequency. He had a lot of potential when he started and I just think that Breakthrough unleashed all of that potential so we got to see him show how strong he was, physically strong. We already knew that he was mentally strong but I feel like the program just brought out the best in him and we got to see his true potential that we always one was there.
What were your biggest concerns before starting at Breakthrough?
I was most concerned with the pace he was achieving milestones. We already knew that he would be behind but I just felt like the therapy that he was receiving in school and early intervention just wasn’t enough and that we needed to find something different that we could see him grow and make progress at a faster rate. We knew that he could we just didn’t have access to a different program.
What kind of improvements have you been able to see or what kind of impact on your son's life have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Besides just being physically stronger, we just see more confidence in him and I just look at him and he doesn’t even look the same to me. He’s just gotten so much stronger and we can see ahead. It’s a different outlook we have now that we can see in him and that I guess he feels it too. That just looking at tackling life and each day differently because he’s really just gotten a lot stronger that he didn’t know he could do or that we didn’t know he could do.
How has working with Breakthrough helped Amari?
I just feel like he can do anything; That this is the right program for him. We finally found what we were looking for and we’re excited about him having independent mobility which is something that we always wanted for him but we had to find the right place and the right program that would allow him to be able to move about independently.
I know he’s going to walk. I know he’s going to move around and I’m going to have to run after him and it’s just nice to finally know that that’s going to happen because we weren’t sure prior to finding Breakthrough. But, he will.
What do you want other people to know about working with us?
This is one of the best things to happen to my family. I think once you meet the staff here, you feel like you’re part of the family and it’s just really genuine. And whatever outside support you need, it’s more than just coming here for PT, but they want to help your family in all aspects and you don’t find that in every place that you go. It’s just such a wonderful, big happy family and I’m so glad to be inducted into this family. I think that’s what everyone needs to know. It’s just such a great place and a great family atmosphere.
If someone was on the fence about working with us what would make them feel confident about giving us a try?
You have to speak with Christine and that’s it. You’ll talk to her and that’s it. You have to do it. It’s 1000% worth it and any doubts that you have just call the office, come in, and you’ll be hooked. That’s it.
Do this. Come here. Bring your children. This is just the best place and if you’re on the fence or looking for a place with this type of service, this is where you need to be. My family commutes from the Bronx. We take an hour each way to get here and it’s 1000% worth it. So get over here. It’s just a great place for your child or whoever, it’s just a great place to be.

Interviewee: Mom, Nadene
Daughter: Mechele, 24 years old, Dystonic Cerebral Palsy
Main Goal: Be as independent and mobile as possible
Could you describe what things were like when she first began working with Breakthrough PT?
N- I wanted her to be as independent and mobile as possible.
Were there things you felt like she could do, but just wasn’t able to do at that time?
N- Yes. I think that she could stand better and actually probably take better steps but you know, she just needed someone to push her harder...hence Christine.
What kind of improvements have you been able to see or what kind of impact on your daughters' life have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough?
N- She can now actually hold her body. I saw her almost put a pair of pants on by herself. She does a lot now. She can almost get in her chair - her wheelchair by herself. It shocked me. She can stand longer, her climbing in and out of bed is easier. She can even ride her bike now by herself so her legs have gotten a whole lot stronger.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with us?
N- Chance! No, just kidding! I like the office. I like the fact that I can actually see what you all are doing with my child and you’re all working hard. I like that.
How has working with Breakthrough helped you feel about your daughters confidence and mobility?
N- I think that since she’s been coming to Breakthrough she’s going to be able to do so much more than anyone expects her to do. So I give you all an A+!
What do you want other people to know about working with us?
N- Just come and do it. Breakthrough is awesome. If your child needs that help, you need to bring them here. If you don’t have the funds, they’ll help you find a way to get it. Just do not let your child sit at home and do nothing! Breakthrough has done wonders for my daughter and they could do the same for anyone’s child.
If someone was on the fence about working with us what would make them feel confident about giving us a try?
N- Christine is crazy, she works your child hard but believe me she does it with love and they have a cutie therapy dog!
Do you want to add anything else? Or do you want people to know anything else about us?
N- Just come and do it. Breakthrough is awesome. If your child needs that help, you need to bring them here. If you don’t have the funds, they’ll help you find a way to get it. Just do not let your child sit at home and do nothing! Breakthrough has done wonders for my daughter and they could do the same for anyone’s child.

Interviewee: Mom, Lourdes
Daughter: Sofia, Age 6, Hemiplegic Cerebral Palsy
Main Goal: Be as independent as she possibly can
Could you tell me your name, daughters name, age and diagnosis?
L- Hi, my name is Lourdes, my daughter's name is Sofia. She is 6 and a half years old and she was diagnosed when she was born with bleeding in her brain which is basically a stroke that she had when I was still pregnant. Due to the stroke she developed hydrocephalus and also some damage in the brain which caused cerebral palsy.
Could you describe what things were like when you first started working with Breakthrough PT? Things that you were concerned about, or that you wanted her to work on?
L- When I contacted Christine I was already planning on Sofia having a procedure on her left leg, which was to help to eliminate the spasticity on her left extremity. I knew that after the procedure we would have to have more defined or intensive therapy to help her get back to her base-line basically, and then improve and try to get her muscles strong after the surgery.
What kind of improvements have you seen in your daughters life, that you’ve been able to see or feel that are a result of working with us?
L- She definitely has passed her base-line from before surgery. Once you lose the spasticity, you have to learn to reuse your muscles, because it’s totally different before surgery. So she has defiantly gained strength in her legs, in her ankles, she can move her toes up very slightly she’s ambulating at school better and also improving going up and down the stairs.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
L- Well we love Christine. I met Christine when Sofia was 2 and half years old at a different center. Christine was just very very good with children and she has a great… I don’t know. It’s just so friendly that Sofia doesn’t feel as if she’s doing therapy, she’s just having fun. Just coming to see friends and family you know? It’s fun.
How has working with Breakthrough helped you feel about your daughters confidence and mobility?
L- It makes me feel like there is much more for her. A lot more that she can achieve compared to sometimes years ago I remember when some therapies would say “she has c.p. that’s the way it is”, and I wasn’t happy with that answer. I knew she will be able to do much more than what she was doing. So there are always possibilities, there is always hope for improvement.
What would you want other people to know about working with us?
L- I want them to know that you should definitely, definitely stop by and have an evaluation because it is so worth it. I am so thankful that I was recommended to this type of therapy and met Christine because literally she has been through the biggest steps in Sofia’s life. Which was walking for the first time, and standing up from the floor for the first time when she was almost 3 years old so it is so worth it.
If someone was on the fence about working with us what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
L- That there is nothing to regret, nothing to lose. It is always great to try different things. There is nothing to lose, only something good could come out of it.
Is there anything else you want to add or want people to know?
L- We love the family here at Breakthrough. We love Christine, we love Michelle, she's great with responding with everything and Chance is just such a great little dog…or big dog. So it’s just a great environment to be around.
Interviewee: Mom, Daina
Son: Charlotte, 12 years old, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex with Epilepsy
Main Goal: Gain more mobility and independence
Can you describe what things were like before Charlotte began working with Breakthrough PT?
D- Before she began working with Breakthrough I noticed that as she was getting older it was getting a little bit more difficult for her to maneuver around. She was bigger she was gaining weight and I just found that getting up from chairs, moving up and down stairs was becoming a little bit more difficult for her.
What were you most concerned about?
D- I was most concerned with mobility for her and being able to do things independently. I really tried to give her as much independence as possible but with her lack of mobility it’s difficult and I’m her mom and I always feel like I want to do things for her. In terms of moving around and doing it independently and not feeling nervous that she might fall. Those were the concerns.
Why were you seeking alternative therapy?
D- I actually was researching physical therapy places because she does receive physical therapy in school but I just didn’t feel like it was enough for her. She receives physical therapy in school, 3 days a week and we really wanted something more, more focused for her and when I found Breakthrough online and saw videos I was very intrigued and it looked really impressive so I felt like maybe this would be a good opportunity for her to get extra help besides what she’s getting in school.
What kind of improvements have you noticed as a result of her working with Breakthrough?
D- I’ve definitely seen an improvement in her motivation and strength as well. At home I’m noticing that she’s able to get up from a chair more easily on her own, she wants to be where we are. Like if were in a different room, she’ll get up all by herself and move across the room to be with us which is something that she rarely did at this age. When she was little it was easier for her to move around because she was smaller but as she started getting older, that’s when I noticed that she kind of slowed down. But being here seeing how she’s changed within that time that we’ve been here. She’s definitely more motivated to move and get up to move to a place that she really wants to be. And also Christine works on doing stairs with her, so at home she’s been able to do the stairs better, which makes it much easier for me I don’t have to give her as much guidance and support so she’s able to do that more independently which is something I really wanted for her, to be a little bit more independent.
And how has that impacted you and your families life?
D- It makes us so happy and proud of her to see her get up from the chair and want to move and be with us. It makes us so proud of her and just happy that she is able to get up and be with her cousins, be with her friends, instead of being very stationary in one spot, which for a long time she was. I’d have to go and force her to get up and move but now if she sees something thats motivating, like video games or if we’re in another room watching TV she wants to come and be with us. And she does, she gets up by herself and moves herself to come be with us. And like I said the stairs have also been a huge improvement which is much easier on me, my back, physically, which is really nice. And doing more physical activity, riding her bike. She rides her bike - that Christine most generously donated to us - she rides with her little sister through the neighborhood which is amazing that we can do stuff like that as a family. It’s just really nice.
What do you love the most about visiting our office and working with us?
D- You guys are just like a family office. You’re very supportive you get to know the clients more on a personal level which is really nice. You remember what's going on in my life, sometimes I don’t even remember what I did last week, and I’ll come in and you’ll ask me about it. And ask me how Charlotte was doing with something that might have happened in school or on a vacation. It’s very personable, also you know, you push Charlotte. You push her to do things that I might be nervous about. You push her to be better which I want her to better too, but for me as her mom I just feel I’m nervous to try things. Where as if she comes in here and Christine shows me how to do it and she practices it, it makes me more comfortable with trying things at home with her.
How has working with Breakthrough helped you feel about your daughter’s confidence and mobility?
D- Well like I said before I’m very happy. And she’s very excited to be here, she comes in very happy. When Charlotte doesn’t want to do something you really, really know, and she would fight me but when she walks through the door she’s happy and she’s laughing and she’s having a good time. Christine always makes it fun for her, pushes her but in a silly way. Charlotte is working really hard every time she comes in here. She works really hard every day of her life to do the simplest things so for her to be pushed to walk on a treadmill, and do squats with weights on her feet and things like that and still want to come and still have fun. I think it says a lot about your office that she wants to be here and she wants to work hard so I think her confidence is building that way, that she sees she can do it, it makes her happy so of course her confidence is going to build from that.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough?
D- I would say, if you’re nervous to try it to just give it a shot. It’s definitely a different way of approaching physical therapy, but I feel like for Charlotte, for my daughter, it’s been amazing for her. I would say if you really want a place that provides the individualized attention and you're not just another client coming through the door, like you’re really going to be a person to them like you guys treat us like we’re people. You know all the ins and outs of our lives. I think that individualized attention and the fact that it's a different way of approaching physical therapy and getting a little bit more out of it then what the typical school physical therapy would provide for your child. I think it's given Charlotte more then what she could get with just going to school physical therapy.
Is there anything else you want to add, or that you want people to know?
D- As like, personally for my family, I’m excited that you guys offer the sibshop because Charlotte has a sister and I really think that it's important for the siblings to be a part of what's going on in the world of their sibling who may have special needs. One day, and Christine keeps telling me that Aubrey is going to be old enough to get there and do that, so that’s very exciting. Like I said I like that you offer that as well to your clients. And Chance is here, a dog who is super cute and takes part in the sessions so why not come and meet Chance!
Interviewee: Mom, Gina
Son: Cadence, Age 13, Fox G1 Syndrome
Main Goal: Avoid hip and back surgery, improve mobility
Could you describe what things were like when your child first began working with Breakthrough PT?
When we first started working with Breakthrough PT, Cadence was facing hip surgery and we were really focusing on opening up her hips and she’s worked so hard, Christine has worked so hard with Cadence, that she no longer has to have hip surgery.
Were there things you felt she could do but wasn’t able to do?
Definitely weight bearing. That was a huge part in why we came here so that Christine could put the bands on her so she can weight bear and circulation is huge too and that’s starting to get better as well.
Why were you seeking alternative therapy?
We’ve tried so many different physical therapists. We’ve tried bracing and we just found that this works best for her because she’s also free to move her body the way that she wants to.
What kind of improvements or impact on you and your daughter’s life have you been able to see or feel as a result of working with Breakthrough PT?
I find that Cadence loves to be independent and stand up like a big girl and take steps. She wants to go in the worst way. She is taking independent steps in her pony walker at school and everybody is just seeing such a difference with her. With her motivation, with wanting to move her body, and wanting to take those steps.
What do you love most about visiting our office?
I have to say…we love Christine and we love Michelle but we really love Chance. We love him. Cadence loves him. And I love how Chance motivates Cadence to move and we’ve never had any type of therapy where they used an animal to help with any type of services, therapy, and it has really made a difference.
How has working with Breakthrough PT helped you feel about your daughter’s confidence and mobility?
It has helped in so many ways. Cadence is heads up, big smile. I can just see the difference in her face and how proud she is of herself and how her self esteem has gone up tremendously.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
I want them to know how amazing this therapy is and how much it can help anyone move their body, get your weight shifted, get your circulation going and make yourself feel really proud; Proud of who you are.
If someone was on the fence about working with Breakthrough, what would you say to them?
First I would say they are nuts and they need to really see some of these children and the smiles on their faces. This therapy has to be one of the best. We’ve tried so many different types of therapies and this is top, by far, the best therapy we’ve ever tried with Cadence.
Is there anything else you would want people to know?
I love being part of the Breakthrough Family. My daughter loves being part of the Breakthrough family. I’ve seen so many new things and new motivations that Cadence is trying to do and she’s really doing it and this is a true blessing to have this here on Long Island.

Interviewee: Mom, Natalia
Son: Daniel, 22 y.o, Autism
Main Goal: Reduce his anxiety and get him more motivated for physical activity
Can you describe what things were like when your son/daughter first started working with Breakthrough?
Daniel was not interested in physical fitness or exercise until he started working out in the class, and now he loves it and is reluctant to miss any session!
What improvements have you been able to see and feel as a result of working with Breakthrough?
I believe that fitness class gives Daniel a good work out and relief from anxiety about doing exercises. It has also given him a great ability to socialize with others and become a helpful and kind person, as he was intended to be.
What kind of impact has it had on your life and your son/daughters life and confidence?
It gave me assurance that Daniel can work with other people in a group and meet new friends. What a beautiful impact on his and my life indeed. We are truly excited about Daniels interest in physical fitness!
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
I absolutely love the wonderful and caring personell I have come in contact with. Your staff has a special touch with parents and people of different type of disabilities. It is a true gift and mercy that we do not see often. I admire your kindness and understanding and prompt responses. Thank you!
If someone was on the fence about working with us - what do you think would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
It is an individual decision, but I would tell them, what do you have to lose? The staff is very professional and even if the session will not work out as you imagined it, let them find a key to the person’s abilities and interests. The folks at Breakthrough absolutely know what they are doing and will achieve miracles. Give them a try!
Anything else you want to add or want people to know?
My deep appreciation of all that you have done for Daniel and my hope that he will have a great skill of physical fitness and enjoy working out for his body and soul.

Interviewee: Mom, Irene
Son: Nico, 24 years old, Autism, Anxiety, ADHD
Main Goal: More structure and build on his fitness
Nico's Story
My name is Irene Reale, and my son’s name is Nicholas. He has a diagnosis of Autism, anxiety & ADHD. I signed up Nicholas for a fitness group at Breakthrough so that he can get a structured fitness program with staff that knew how to work with adults with disabilities. He does go to another gym and uses the treadmill and machines, but there is no structure there and he’s not getting the most out of his fitness regime.
Nico loves attending the weekly classes. He works considerably harder than I expected but never complains about it because he truly enjoys it so much. His back muscles have become stronger and he stands up straighter. The program runs for a full hour and all participants work hard during that time.
The office staff are very kind and attentive and will answer any questions you may have. I hope that this program will continue to help my son strengthen his muscles while having fun and being social at the same point.

Interviewee: Mom, Alissa
Son: Idris, 11 years old, Autism
Main Goal: Physical, mental, and emotional confidence!
Can you describe what things were like when your son/daughter first started working with Breakthrough?
Idris began coming to his bootcamp class at Breakthrough several months ago. He had had a very difficult adjustment to middle school. Teachers and peers didn't really "get" him and his meltdowns at school had lead to an in-school suspension.
I felt that my son needed something to give him both physical and social/emotional confidence, and an activity to help him expend his physical energy. Idris is physically clumsy and awkward, and struggles in gym class due to poor executive functioning and gross motor skills. I hoped for him to have the chance to feel strong physically and emotionally. We had not previously pursued any type of group classes for him.
What kinds of improvements/impact on your life and your son/daughter’s life have you been able to see as a result of working with Breakthrough PT?
Idris has been doing so well since attending his Breakthrough classes! He comes out of class feeling so accomplished and proud! He is so pleased to have accomplished something that he previously thought he couldn't do. I have definitely seen an increased ability to self-regulate, as well as an increase in his confidence since starting bootcamp classes
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
I love Breakthrough because it is such a friendly and accepting space. I love the chance to chat with other parents in the waiting area, or with Christine and other staff while my son is in his class. There is such a focus on ensuring that parents of children with special needs are supported, and I am so impressed with the programming that they offer for families!
How has working with Breakthrough PT helped you feel about your son’s confidence/mobility?
I alluded to it earlier, but want to reiterate that for a kid who feels so "different" from his peers. It is amazing for him to attend a class where he comes out feeling strong and confident. This definitely carries over to the school environment, letting him interact with other children at school feeling that he is not "less than" they are.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
Breakthrough is wonderful! It is more than just a physical therapy center. Christine is such an amazing, impressive, and empathetic leader. We are lucky to have her in our community. She is wise beyond her years, and has assembled and incredible team to help her fulfill her mission.
If someone was on the fence about working with us - what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
I was definitely on the fence because, let's face it, it is not cheap to enroll in the group classes. But after trying baseball, track, music, gymnastics, and countless other classes for my son, we have finally found the one class that he is excited about and doesn't want to miss each week! It has been more than worth it for us.

Interviewees: Mom, Victoria and Dad, Todd
Son: Sean, 12 years old, Autism and ADHD
Main Goal: Peer interactions and improved fitness and group participation!
Can you describe what things were like when your son/daughter first started working with Breakthrough?
Our son, Sean, started with the Breakthrough team in late September of 2019. We had just begun a weight management program with his pediatrician. He was starting to hit puberty and gaining a great deal of weight. After his lab results revealed that his sugar and liver numbers were completely out of range for a child his age, we made the decision to find a class or activity that could help and encourage him to get more healthy.
Our boy is 12 years old. He has Autism and also ADHD. Because of his sensory issues, getting him to eat the right foods is a daily struggle. He lacks any interest in playing sports, and in general, most physical activities. It’s made it very difficult to manage his weight and health.
What improvements have you been able to see and feel as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Since he’s started, we’ve seen so many improvements, in so many areas. Just to name a few, coordination, focus, patience, behavior, social awareness, and his overall physicalness and health. Also, his confidence has grown and continues to help him grow with every class that he attends.
When we went back to the doctor three months later, he not only lost weight, but most of his numbers came down. The liver number by a third. We were blown away. Adding these classes with his new diet was what he needed to make him successful.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
I love that they also use the children to help and motivate one another. It especially helps getting them through a difficult move or behavior. When Sean is struggling or needs that push or focus, the instructor and kids high-five each other or cheer each other on, and he works through it. He loves coming to the class and now refers to the other children as his “friends”. It also makes us so happy to see him trying to make connections with the other children.
Is there anything else you would want to add or want people to know?
We were so lucky to have found Breakthrough’s group exercise class. Due to his special needs, I was not expecting that it would be so welcoming and inclusive of his physical abilities. With the class size being small it's much easier to follow along. Caitlin and Christine are wonderful. They make the sessions fun and they really cater to all of the children’s needs. They have a special knack for pulling the class together and keeping them on track. The kids get a really good workout and every time he goes I can see the progress.
The team at Breakthrough has been wonderful and supportive through it all. We can’t thank them enough for all the attention and help that they’ve given Sean and our family.
We couldn’t be any happier with Seans progress and we look forward to his future successes in class.

Interviewee: Mom, Beth
Son: Shane, 17 years old, Cerebral Palsy, Hydrocephalus, ADHD, and Seizure Disorder
Main Goal: Improve walking and muscle tightness
Can you describe what things were like when Shane first started working with Breakthrough PT?
Shane had a very unsteady gait, right sided weakness and when he walked he used his arms to balance. Shane has had several surgeries to release the tightness in his hamstrings and I'm always concerned that if he is not stretched he will get tight again. I felt he was not walking as good and as much as he could have. Shane is very outgoing and loves to socialize and I felt with group classes he would get a good work out, make physical therapy fun and make new friends all at the same time.
What kinds of improvements/impact on yours and Shane's life have you been able to see or feel as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Shane has become stronger and more confident. He is walking more without his walker and he's not relying on me as much.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough PT?
I love that Shane cannot wait to go. That Breakthrough PT makes his sessions fun and he really enjoys it!
How has working with Breakthrough PT helped you feel about Shane's confidence/mobility?
Shane's confidence and mobility both have improved tremendously. He is stronger and more confident with his walking and doesn't extend his arms a lot.
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
That Breakthrough Therapy is amazing. The facility is clean. The staff is friendly, courteous and caring. We also get to play with Chance.

Interviewee: Mom, Sheryl
Son & Daughter: Shira and Daniel, Autism
Main Goal: To get healthier, keep in shape, and lose weight
Could you tell us your son/daughter’s name, age and diagnosis?
I have two children on the autistic spectrum. Shira age 31 with mild autism and Daniel age 27 with moderate autism.
Can you describe what things were like when your son/daughter first started working with Breakthrough?
My husband and I had concerns about Shira and Daniels' limited abilities in motor planning, sensory integration, and visual spacial representations. We were also concerned that neither of our children participated adequately in physical activities and we were confident that group would get them into better shape.
What improvements have you been able to see and feel as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Daniel and Shira look forward to going to this group weekly, and have shown markedly improved physical stamina and coordination. Christine has been an exceptional therapist and leader!
What impact has it had on your life and your son/daughter's life and confidence?
Both kids feel more confident in their physical abilities and in their ability to navigate complex "space".
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
Everyone has an extremely positive and "can do" attitude. Our kids love the music that Christine provides, which acts as an additional motivator.
If someone is one the fence about working with us- what do you think would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
I can attest to the transformative effects of your center and its capable staff.
Anything else you want to add or want people to know?
We have seen many therapists through our voyage with our kids (now young adults) and clearly Breakthrough stands out and stands high!

Interviewee: Mom, Lori
Son: Tyler, Autism
Main Goal: Improve the quality of his life
Could you tell us your son/daughters name, age and diagnosis?
Son- Tyler Mattera – Tyler is diagnosed with ADHD, intellectual disability, Autism, anxiety and PTHD- (afraid to fall)
Can you describe what things were like when your son/daughter first started working with Breakthrough?
Tyler has a fear of falling and does not want to walk, we could not even take him out to a store prior to PT.
What were you most concerned with?
We were most concerned about Tyler’s quality of life, he was always a very active child before witnessing his grandmother take a very bad fall.
Were there things you felt he/she could do but wasn't?
Yes, everything!! Tyler always liked to run, walk, play soccer, always be outdoors!
Why were you seeking alternative therapy/group classes?
To help push Tyler get over his fear and to keep his motor skills active.
What improvements have you been able to see and feel as a result of working with Breakthrough?
Tyler is more willing to try now, he does not fight as much. He now works out every day on the treadmill and we do some other exercises at home. He is willing to go to PT which in the beginning he did not want to. He hates to miss Bootcamp as it is not only a work out but a friend gathering. He has learned to love exercise and we have noticed his anxiety level has decreased!
How has working with Breakthrough PT helped you feel about your son/daughters confidence and mobility?
His confidence has increased tremendously, he likes to be praised and keeps pushing to try to walk freely. He loves to watch the videos I take during his session.
What do you love most about visiting our office and working with Breakthrough?
Visiting Breakthrough PT is like visiting family, everyone is always so welcoming and willing to help in any way. One of the most amazing offices I have ever been to!
What would you want other people to know about working with Breakthrough PT?
That Breakthrough is not just PT it's family! Whatever you need or want they are always there for you, helping your child through the next phase of their therapy and helping you implement it in the community.
If someone was on the fence about working with us - what would make them feel more confident about giving us a try?
Give it a try, you will not be sorry, you will see the great lengths this team goes through to make your child feel at home and become the best version of themselves
Anything else you want to add or want people to know?
Give Breakthrough PT a try, come join the family!

Could you please tell us about your family and specifically your child that attends Sibshops?
Owen is 13 years old and has an 8 year old brother with a rare chromosome disorder who has a severe intellectual disability who is also deaf and non-verbal.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
We were interested in Sibshops for Owen so that he could have peers to talk to about the experience of having a sibling with a disability while having fun. We hoped that it would help Owen make sense of the often unique and non-traditional sibling relationship he has with his brother, as well as the unique way we often need to operate as a family. There are often things that we are not able to do as a family as a result of his brother's special needs and we were hopeful that through Sibshops he would find a sense of belonging being around other kids who are experiencing similar frustrations and disappointments. Since Owen's brother often needs a tremendous amount of our attention out of necessity for his safety and well being, we wanted Owen to be part of Sibshops where the focus of his brother's disability was on Owen's experience with it.
How do you feel it's made an impact on their life?
Sibshops has helped Owen tremendously. If you ask him what he likes about it, he will tell you that #1 - It's FUN and #2 - He has made some great friends. We feel it is so important for his emotional health to have a healthy and safe environment to share his feelings about having a sibling with a disability - the good, the bad and everything in between. The kids are so understanding because they can relate to what they are going through, and they encourage one another by sharing what has been helpful to them from their experience. It truly is an invaluable resource.
What's your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
Our favorite part of having Owen in Sibshops is that it is dedicated time for him to have fun, be himself, talk to other kids who "get it" and be part of a group that helps each other navigate the complex feelings and emotions that come from having a sibling with such unique needs.
If someone was unsure about trying out Sibshops, what would you like them to know?
If someone was unsure about whether or not to try Sibshops we would recommend they really encourage their child to give it a try. Owen did not want to go when we first told him about it. It actually took us almost a year to convince him to try it, and he loved it immediately. It is literally the #1 thing he looks forward to. Sibshops is just wonderful!
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Out of the many, many services our family receives or is involved in as a result of Owen's brother's disability, we feel that Sibshops is one of the most indispensable. It not only serves Owen extremely well, but by helping Owen learn to navigate his relationship with his brother, we trust that it will serve them both immeasurably over a lifetime.

Could you please tell us about your family and specifically your child that attends Sibshops?
Our daughter is 14 years old, and has been participating in Sibshops since she was 7 years old. She has an 11 year old sister with a rare neurological disorder called CDD, Autism and Epilepsy.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
We were very motivated to find a support group for her. Being a sibling of a child with special needs can be very rewarding, but also has its challenges. We recognized this pretty early on. Attention is diverted from them because of unavoidable medical issues and hospital stays. The time needed to address behavioral issues and physical and speech delays also consume parents - taking away time from the Sib. Our daughter was forced to mature much faster and become more independent because of what she saw and experienced, in the home, differing from her peers. They may worry about the way the world preceives their Sibling. We were aware of the supports available to us as parents and therapies and supports available for my daughter with special needs but had nothing in place for her at the time.
How do you feel it's made an impact on their life?
Being a part of Sibshops has been a very important part of her life. She has peer support in this group, that get what she is going through. She is able to discuss issues that only pertain to kids like her, with families like hers. She has developed life-long friendships. She has also learned coping skills through discussion activities. She is better equipped to deal with some of the unique struggles surrounding our family dynamic and knows she's not alone.
What's your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
She has an outlet, just for her, that is safe and supportive. She has so much fun and looks forward to seeing her facilitators and friends. She gets to pass on her experiences to help some of the younger siblings.
If someone was unsure about trying out Sibshops, what would you like them to know?
If someone was unsure about Sibshops, I would let them know that they have nothing to lose by checking out the group. It is tons of fun, up beat, fast moving, creative and inspiring, while providing an outlet for important issues that pertain specifically to their child.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Sometimes Sibs may seem like they have it all together becasue they have no choice to be, but they need support too. They often don't want to worry their parents or be a burden. They feel the need to excel. Sibshops address many issues in a very laid back, non therapeutic, fun environment.

Daughter: Meghan, 14 years old and has a twin sister with Autism.
Could you please tell us about your family and your child that attends Sibshops?
Meghan is 14 years old and has a twin sister with Autism.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
Years ago, my husband and I began to notice that although Meghan was involved in different sports activities, she didn't have any activities that focused on just her. Erin (her sister) had PT, OT, Speech, and behavioral therapy. Meghan needed some special time as well. As they got older, Meghan needed to be able to spend time with other kids who had experienced similar things. We found a group and it was wonderful. That group turned into what she has today. If possible, she has more patience and understanding with her sister.
How do you feel it’s made an impact on their life?
Know their frustrations are typical sibling frustrations.
What’s your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
Meghan has a bond with these kids and it is so beautiful. I think they have become like a family to each other. She has been so excited that she is "seeing" some of the others twice a week now.

Son: Logan, His brother Landon, age 8 has autism.
Could you please tell us about your family and your child that attends Sibshops?
Logan, age 10 participates in the sib workshop. Logan is the oldest of 3 other brothers! His brother Landon, age 8 has autism.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
Logan is a shy child, and we always worry that he has too much responsibility for a child his age. We know we definitely ask a lot of him, and wanted him to have an outlet and safe place to know he is not alone. We weren’t even sure if he would like the sib workshops, and were over the moon happy when he said he loved it and couldn’t wait to go again! Even with the zoom sessions, I was hesitant he wouldn’t want to do it, but he loves it! And asks every week! We are so happy!
How do you feel it’s made an impact on their life?
Logan seems more patient, and even the way he talks to his special needs brother... it’s so sweet.
What’s your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
This is something just for Logan!! Which is most important I think! It’s hard when there are so many children under the same roof.... and especially Logan being the oldest. We love that every week for an hour, he goes off alone to meet with you guys and the other participants.
If someone was unsure about trying out Sibshops, what would you like them to know?
It’s worth trying!!! I definitely was hesitant about Logan liking it, and I think initially I signed him up more for us (lol) we did tell him that if he didn’t like it he didn’t have to do it ever again. So he knew nothing was forced. You all make it so fun and comfortable for him and we are so happy he loves it so much!

Daughter: Christina, 8 years old, and her twin brother has autism.
Could you please tell us about your family and your child that attends Sibshops?
Christina is 8 years old, and her twin brother has autism.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
Christina expressed sadness and frustration that her brother doesn’t want to/isn’t able to play with her in the same way she sees other siblings playing together. While she is able to recognize and celebrate his strengths, she definitely experiences a great deal of frustration with his challenges (perseverating on his interests...not engaging meaningfully with her...).
What's your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
It’s important to me that she knows there are other kids out there who have the same challenges she does. I appreciate the weekly re-caps and am impressed with the activities the kids are engaging in. I also want Christina to have a safe space to vent about her frustrations with her brother without fear of being judged.
If someone was unsure about trying out Sibshops, what would you like them to know?
Even though Christina was hesitant at first since it was a completely new group of kids, a new space, and she was the youngest, the welcoming energy of the group allowed her to get acclimated quickly. Since she’s started the program and especially since the weekly virtual offering, I’ve noticed she very rarely expresses the frustrations about her brother that she did before.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I am very grateful for this resource and the positive impact it has had for our family!

Son: Matt. He is 13 years old and has a 15 year old sibling with Autism.
Could you please tell us about your family and specifically your child that attends Sibshops?
My son Matt attends sibshops. He is 13 years old and has a 15 year old sibling with Autism.
What made you motivated to get your child involved in Sibshops?
I really wanted Matt to understand that he is not alone in this journey of having a special needs sibling. I thought he was starting to feel like no other kids experience some of the things that he experiences day to day. I also wanted him to have a place where he can share his feelings and hear those of others going through it.
How do you feel it’s made an impact on their life?
He really enjoys sibshops. He immediately connected after the first session and became part of the text group chat. I think that the exercises that are conducted at the sessions really get him thinking about his feelings on a higher level.
What’s your favorite part about having your child involved in Sibshops?
Connection with other children who also experience what it is like to have a “different” family.
If someone was unsure about trying out Sibshops, what would you like them to know?
Their child will love it!
Is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you Christine for your dedication and passion to helping siblings of special needs.
